And hey - I've been there!
I came to the practice of meditation tired, disconnected and working to fix myself, because I believed I was broken. (I wasn't)
I simply veered off course from living true to my values. (I didn't even know what that meant at the time.)
Meditation and yoga brought me back to me and helped me re-member the fragmented parts of my psyche and Self.
I've worked with a number of different types of meditation over the years, however the one that impacted me most was a 4-day silent retreat I attended in the hills of Northern Thailand in 2014.
This experience changed me. How I see myself. How I relate to my thoughts and my mind.
Consider this: The mind is a clear blue sky, and the thoughts that come and go simply weather. Your breath and non-judgmental awareness are like the wind that allows the weather patterns to shift.
Through many years of yoga practice and study along with practicing therapeutic and Thai massage I have amassed a unique understanding of the connection between the mind, emotions and physical body.
I see there are SO many options when it comes to teachings and apps and meditation techniques that it can feel overwhelming. An overwhelmed mind will simply freeze. Does that feel familiar?
That is not helpful when it comes to transforming and recalibrating energy.
I've also seen people say "I can't meditate" for a variety of reasons.
Maybe it's because in our culture of need instant gratification, the feeling of "nothing happening" feels like you aren't being productive.
Do you notice a full body change in your physique after going to the gym for one session? Nope.
Meditation is the same. You gotta put in your reps.
And no it doesn't have to be days spent on a retreat.
It requires daily checkin for a short amount of time. Consistency is key.
What happens on the meditation cushion is the practice of presence with oneself.
Through this a recalibration happens through heart/brain coherence.
Deeper self-awareness and connection to your body occurs, so you can respond honestly to your own needs, moment by moment.
While you may have moments in practice where answers and insights flash through you like lightning, what I find is that fruits of the practice are actually experienced when we are living our life out in the wild, not necessarily on the mat.
That is, you feel less pissed at the person who cuts you off in traffic.
You have more patience with your parents when helping them with technology or more patience when your14-year needs help with math and you have no idea what they are teaching these days.
You don't sweat the small stuff so much. You realize MOST of it is small stuff.
So your chill factor is maximized.
You are just a nicer person to be around.
Your energy is more magnetic.
You feel more connected and whole within yourself.
It's a sweet spot to be. You can be there too.
Your calm, relaxed presence is the greatest gift you can give to the world.
